Local Government Transparency Code

The Local Government Transparency Code 2015 came into effect on 1st April 2015.

The Code is issued by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in exercise of their powers under section 2 of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980 to issue a Code of Recommended Practice (The Code) as to the publication of information by local authorities about the discharge of their functions and other matters which is considered to be relevant.

The Code sets out key principles for local authorities in creating greater transparency through the publication of public data.  The Code does not replace or supersede the existing legal framework for access to public sector information provided by the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Environmental Information Regulations 2004, the Re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2005 and INSPIRE Regulations 2009.

Full details of the Code can be found on the Government’s website.
