PRESS RELEASE
COMMUNITY JOINS FORCES AGAINST DCC’S PROPOSED ON-STREET PARKING PAYMENT SYSTEM IN DARTMOUTH.
Thursday 29th February 2024
In response to the proposal of a payment system for on-street parking throughout the year in the eight identified towns by Devon County Council (DCC). The community have come together in an effort to voice their opposition.
County and District Cllr Jonathan Hawkins has offered to provide a vintage double decker bus to ferry concerned citizens to County Hall and back in order for their voices to be heard at this crucial Cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 13th, 2024.
“We believe it is essential for the community’s voices to be heard on this matter,” stated Cllr Hawkins. “Providing transportation to County Hall is just one way we can ensure that residents have the opportunity to make their representations directly to decision-makers.”
Teddy Cranmer led a campaign in Royal Avenue Gardens supported by Dartmouth Town Council to gather over 3000 signed petitions against this proposal and then both Teddy and Cllr Hawkins delivered these petitions to County Hall in December.
Dartmouth Town Council voted unanimously against this proposal from DCC in October of last year and agreed to send both a joint letter from the identified towns and an individual letter expressing how the Town Council was against these proposals.
The Mayor of Dartmouth, Cllr David Wells also expressed support for the community’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of citizen engagement in local governance. “The proposed on-street parking payment system could have significant impacts on our community,” stated Cllr Wells. “It is heartening to see residents coming together to oppose measures that could adversely affect our town.”
Those interested in securing a seat on the vintage double-decker bus are encouraged to email reception@dartmouthtowncouncil.gov.uk, where their request will be forwarded to Cllr Hawkins. Alternatively, individuals who are friends with Cllr Hawkins on Facebook can message him directly to reserve their place.
