ANDREA CATES – Short Bio
Originally from the West Country, my husband and I retired to Dartmouth in 2016 after a long teaching career in the senior school sector, during which time I fulfilled various roles within the state, international and independent systems. I previously served two terms as an elected board member of the International School of Amsterdam and currently sit on the board of a local primary school. I have also retained my links with the education sector by invigilating in public examinations for a couple of local schools and marking GCSE examination scripts for one of the boards.
Outside of education, I have been a Dartmouth Town Councillor since 2021 and during the last council year held the post of Deputy Mayor before being elected as Mayor for the current year. I was motivated to become a councillor because I began to understand that many of the things that the general consensus of opinion believed was the job of the Town Council, were not and I wanted to learn where the responsibility lay and what, therefore, the Town Council could do for the local community. It has been a steep learning curve! It is an honour to be elected to the position of Mayor for Dartmouth and I look forward to serving the interests of the whole community.
When I manage to squeeze in some leisure time, I like to spend it with my family or walking some of our beautiful local sites with my husband and our black Labrador, Ron. I can also be found on the river rowing Seine boats with one of the local clubs, the River Dart Rowing Club, of which I am the secretary.
