Dartmouth Town Council – April Update

It’s been a busy few months at Dartmouth Town Council and as our lovely town starts to open up, we will be seeing a few changes around town. In fact, there are a few changes in the Council as we have been joined by five new Councillors, Cllr Andrea Cates, Cllr Martin McGowan Scanlon, Cllr Nick Davies, Cllr Phil Howard and Cllr Sophie Rennie. Their energy, experience and enthusiasm will be very welcome.

One of the Council’s most ambitious projects is now mere weeks from going live; CCTV has been installed in 11 locations around the town centre. The cameras are imminently to be connected to the Torbay Hub, meaning that finding perpetrators of criminal and antisocial behaviour will be far easier. It is hoped, that for this reason, the cameras will prove to be a deterrent and reduce the antisocial behaviour we have seen around town.  We are planning to add more cameras around the top of town and will continue to work closely with the local police.

Now that open-air markets can trade again, we are welcoming some brand new Saturday markets into our beautiful historic Market Square. The second Saturday of the month will feature a brand new Farmers Market showcasing the wonderful local produce, which really is just on our doorstep. The third and fourth Saturdays of every month will feature an eclectic mix of Homeware and Crafts and we are pleased to be welcoming some exciting new traders to these regular markets. We are reserving the first Saturday in every month for use by Community Groups and Charities to help with their fundraising. For costs and availability of these markets please contact Jools at reception@dartmouthtowncouncil.gov.uk or call her on 01803 832281.  All of this is in addition to our regular Tuesday and Friday markets, which are already proving very popular with both traders and customers!

Supporting Dartmouth’s local businesses by shopping and dining out locally is at the forefront of everyone’s mind right now and DTC is doing its bit to help where it can. The incredibly popular Dartmouth Fiver Fest will be returning from 12th – 26th June with many local independent businesses offering a discounted deals for just £5. It is estimated that if every adult in Dartmouth spent just £5 a week in local independent shops and businesses it would put £1.1million back into our local economy. Fiver Fest is a great way to grab a bargain, shop somewhere new and support our small independent shops and cafes.

These have been terrible times for everyone, but hospitality businesses have been especially hard hit. Social distancing restrictions have meant that, even when they can reopen, reduced capacity, in order to maintain social distancing, puts a big dent in possible revenue. Therefore to help those most affected, and after a proper tendering process, DTC has allocated three outside pitches in Royal Avenue Gardens to Bayard’s Cove, Morello’s and Edwards Fudge Shop.

With the new Housing Development now taking shape at Little Cotton Farm, Dartmouth Sports and Leisure facilities are in line for a windfall of over £500,000, in Section 106 money, to be spent improving the town’s sports infrastructure over the next 5 to 10 years. As a result, DTC has reconvened the town’s Sports Forum, working in partnership with Dartmouth Academy and many of our local sports clubs to make plans to make the very best use of the funds. Some of the exciting plans in the pipeline include the possibility of new skate park, a brand new 2G hockey pitch, upgrades to existing facilities and the building of a Clubhouse for everyone to use as a Sports Hub for the town.

You may be wondering why we are posting this update? We feel that there is a lot of work being done by the Council, but it can be hard to get this information out to those it most affects …. You, our residents.  Therefore, we hope you will find this update informative and useful, and that you approve of what we have been up to. Please feel free to send any feedback good or bad to cllrcathycampos@dartmouthtowncouncil.gov.uk.
